Anorexia Nervosa Treatment

 

Anorexia Nervosa is a condition (eating disorder) that affects a decent portion of the women in this world. Statistics have shown that although men are also affected the majority is in women. Out of all cases 85% - 95% are in women, where as only 5% - 10% of these cases are men. For women, it is about 0.10% or 270,000 people in the United States. This however, is also for the people who have been admitted for this disease. There are hundreds of cases that go by unnoticed yearly. This disorder is the cause in 10% of all deaths. It can be very deadly if gone untreated, and has been proven to be a real concern.

Anorexia Nervosa is when one scarcely eats, basically starving themselves. Persons who have this disorder are extremely scared to gain an ounce, never mind a pound. Although very skinny and usually underweight, in their mind they think their fat or over weight. This illusion is what causes them to continue starving themselves.

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to anorexia nervosa, but some main ones are society, parents, and genetics. If there are members of one’s family who are Anorexic then it is common for there to be more and more as time goes on. Mainly because one passes on their beliefs or pressures there was onto their young. Parents who pressure their kids about being fat or gaining weight, usually stores in their mind that they cannot gain a pound. This mental thought makes the children afraid of gaining a pound, which can lead to anorexia.

If you are worried about a friend or child that you think may possibly be anorexic here are some symptoms to pay attention to.

·         Depression

·         Cavities due to self vomiting

·         Bad judgment or poor memory

·         Long periods in the restroom with water constantly running

·         Very sensitive to the cold

·         Little eating at home or during the day

·         Skipping of meals or excuses to not eat with family

These are just some of the many symptoms that you can be sure to see in someone who is anorexic.

Treating anorexia is a very hard process because many people don’t realize they have it. One in particular that is used is therapy. Some types are: psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. Another is drugs for depression. Despite these treatments though, the main thing needed is support. A supportive family, friends and strong individuals are needed for a successful treatment; no matter which option you choose.
